2025 Aluminum Tariffs Explained: What Buyers Should Know

The 2025 aluminum tariffs prompted businesses to reassess material costs, sourcing arrangements, and purchasing schedules. For manufacturers, contractors, and fabricators using aluminum extrusions, understanding what changed provides useful context for conversations with suppliers.

Update: This article originally covered the 25% aluminum tariff announced in February 2025. Rates and other requirements changed afterward, including revisions in 2026. The information below distinguishes the original announcement from later developments.

What Was the 25% Aluminum Tariff Announced in 2025?

On February 10, 2025, a presidential proclamation changed the Section 232 tariff treatment of imported aluminum. A 25% duty took effect on March 12, 2025, for covered aluminum articles and specified derivative products.

The March changes also ended certain quota arrangements and general approved exclusions. Some existing importer-specific exclusions remained effective until their expiration or allocated volume was reached. The original requirements are documented in U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s March 2025 guidance.

For covered entries, the relevant timing was generally when goods entered for consumption or were withdrawn from a warehouse for consumption. Placing an order before the effective date did not, by itself, establish the applicable tariff treatment.

Did Aluminum Tariffs Remain at 25%?

No. Effective June 4, 2025, the Section 232 rate increased from 25% to 50% for covered aluminum imports, with separate treatment for United Kingdom products under that announcement. See CBP’s June 2025 tariff guidance.

Further revisions followed in 2026, including changes to product coverage and applicable rates. The June 2026 presidential proclamation describes additional adjustments.

Treat the original 25% announcement as historical context. For a current import, confirm the product classification, origin, entry date, and applicable rules with your customs broker.

What Do Aluminum Tariffs Mean for Extrusion Buyers?

A tariff announcement raises several purchasing questions, but it does not establish the final price or delivery schedule for every aluminum product.

Material costs: Request a current quote for the exact profile, quantity, and finish you need. Confirm whether applicable surcharges are included and how long the quote remains valid.

Supplier comparisons: Compare equivalent specifications and delivered costs. Cutting, finishing, packaging, and freight can affect the total alongside the material price.

Availability: Verify stock and lead times for your specific order. A broad market announcement cannot tell you when a particular extrusion will be ready to ship.

If you import directly, duties are also part of your customs compliance responsibilities. If you purchase through a supplier, ask how pricing and sourcing affect your order.

How Does Domestic Aluminum Sourcing Fit Into the Decision?

Domestic sourcing is worth discussing when evaluating suppliers, especially when origin documentation or project requirements matter.

Ask where the extrusion is produced and what documentation is available for the specific product. Purchasing from a U.S.-based distributor alone does not establish that every item is U.S.-made.

Also confirm the commercial terms. Domestic production does not guarantee that prices will remain unchanged, so current quotes and written agreements remain essential.
