Shelf Stiffener FAQ
Choosing a Shelf Stiffener
What is a shelf stiffener?
A shelf stiffener is an aluminum profile that presses onto the front edge of a shelf. It makes the shelf stiffer so it bows less under load, and it gives the exposed edge a clean, finished look.
What shelf thickness do shelf stiffeners fit?
The Smooth and Scalloped stiffeners come in two sizes, for 3/4" or 1" shelves. The Safety Edge and Base Support fit 3/4" shelves. Measure your shelf before ordering, since the actual thickness of plywood and other sheet goods can differ from the nominal size.
What is the difference between the smooth and scalloped stiffener?
Only the face. The smooth stiffener has a flat face for a modern look. The scalloped stiffener has a grooved face that adds texture. Both press onto the shelf the same way.
What kinds of shelves can I use them on?
Wood, composite, and panel shelves in cabinetry, casework, built-in shelving, closets, garages, workshops, and retail displays.
What is the Safety Edge for?
The Safety Edge is a scalloped stiffener with a raised front lip. The lip helps keep items from sliding or rolling off the shelf.
What is the Base Support for?
The Base Support has a tall skirt that adds rigidity and hides the underside of the shelf. It includes a fastener channel so you can screw it in place for added load support.
Sagging Shelves
Will a shelf stiffener stop my shelf from sagging?
It reduces sag. A stiffener reinforces the front edge, which is where long shelves bow first. How much it helps depends on the shelf span, the load, and the shelf material.
How do I fix a sagging shelf?
Press a stiffener onto the front edge of the shelf. If the shelf has already bowed, flip it so the bow points up before fitting the stiffener. For very long spans or heavy loads, add a support in the middle as well.
Installing and Cutting
How do you install a shelf stiffener?
Cut the stiffener to the shelf width and press it onto the front edge. It is a push-fit, so no fasteners or adhesives are required. The Base Support can also be screwed in place through its fastener channel.
How do you cut aluminum shelf stiffeners?
Use a miter saw with a carbide-tipped blade rated for non-ferrous metal, cut slowly, and deburr the cut edge. Wear eye protection.
