Aluminum Tariffs: What OEMs, Contractors, and Fabricators Need to Know
Aluminum tariffs can affect sourcing costs, supplier quotes, and purchasing decisions—but a 50% tariff does not automatically mean a 50% increase in your finished-product price. The impact depends on the material, applicable import rules, and how costs move through your supply chain.
For OEMs, contractors, and fabricators, the practical starting point is a current quote with clear information about product origin, availability, and delivery.

What Happened to the 50% Aluminum Tariff?
Effective June 4, 2025, the United States increased Section 232 tariffs on covered aluminum imports from 25% to 50%, with separate treatment for the United Kingdom. That change prompted this article’s original publication. See the June 2025 presidential proclamation.
The rules have changed since then. CBP’s 2026 guidance describes different rates and product categories, including a 50% rate for specified metal articles and different treatment for certain derivative products. It also explains changes to how the customs value is used to calculate duties. Review the CBP implementation guidance.
A July 2026 announcement also introduced a process for qualifying primary-aluminum imports tied to approved U.S. production plans to receive a reduced rate. This is a conditional program, rather than a general reduction for all aluminum purchases. See the official July 2026 announcement.
For a specific import, have your customs broker confirm the applicable classification, origin requirements, entry date, and duties before committing to a landed-cost estimate.
How Aluminum Tariffs Can Affect Your Project
The tariff rate is one part of a purchasing decision. Your quoted price may also reflect material costs, fabrication, finishing, freight, inventory, and supplier terms.
Focus on the factors most relevant to your work:
-
OEMs: Review recurring component costs, forecast quantities, and replenishment schedules.
-
Contractors: Confirm material pricing and quote expiration dates before finalizing project bids.
-
Fabricators: Compare profile dimensions, alloy, temper, finish, and processing requirements when evaluating alternatives.
Availability deserves a separate check. A competitive price is useful only if the material meets your specifications and arrives when you need it.
Compare the Full Cost of Aluminum Sourcing
Before placing an order, ask each supplier for a comparable breakdown of what is included.
Confirm the product specification, quantity, freight, processing charges, and any separately stated surcharges. Ask how long the quote remains valid and whether the delivery date is confirmed or estimated.
If you import directly, include applicable duties, brokerage, and other import costs in your comparison. If you buy through a domestic supplier, clarify which costs are already included in its quote.
This approach helps you compare actual purchasing options without assuming that a tariff headline translates directly into a specific price increase.
Explore American-Made Aluminum Extrusion Options
Orange Aluminum’s original tariff update highlighted its supply chain of American-made aluminum extrusions supported by U.S. manufacturing partners.
For your next order, ask our team about the origin, availability, and documentation for the specific products you need. Domestic sourcing does not guarantee that prices will remain unchanged, but it gives you another option to evaluate alongside imported material.
If your project has domestic-content requirements, share those requirements early so the relevant product documentation can be reviewed.
