How to Install Z-Clips: Your Guide to Z-Clip Fasteners
Z clips are a simple and effective way to securely mount wall panels, architectural millwork, signs, cabinets, displays, artwork and other components while keeping the mounting hardware hidden.
Also referred to as panel cleats, aluminum cleats or French cleat-style mounting systems, Z clips use two interlocking aluminum profiles to create a strong, low-profile connection between a wall and the item being mounted.
One component attaches to the wall while the corresponding Z clip attaches to the panel or object. Once aligned, the two profiles interlock to support the mounted item.

What Is a Z Clip?
A Z clip is an aluminum mounting fastener designed to create a concealed, interlocking connection between two surfaces.

- A corresponding Z clip or continuous panel rail attached to the wall or supporting structure
The opposing profiles slide together, creating a secure mechanical connection while allowing the mounted object to sit close to the wall.

When the panel is lowered into position, the two profiles engage and support the panel.
This creates several advantages compared with mounting directly through the face of the panel:

- Continuous rails can help maintain alignment
- Loads can be distributed across a larger mounting area
- Installation can maintain a clean, finished appearance

Z Clips vs. Panel Rails: What's the Difference?
Z clips and panel rails use the same basic interlocking mounting principle, but they serve different installation requirements.
Individual Z Clips
Individual Z clips are shorter sections of the mounting profile.
They can be positioned at specific attachment points and are useful when:
- Only several mounting points are required
- The object has limited mounting space
- Multiple independent attachment points are preferred
- Material efficiency is important
Continuous Panel Rails
A panel rail extends the Z clip profile across a longer section of the installation.
Continuous rails can make it easier to:
- Align large panels
- Mount multiple panels along the same reference line
- Distribute loads across a wider area
- Reposition components along the rail
- Simplify installation of modular wall systems
For architectural panels, commercial millwork, signage and larger installations, a continuous panel rail paired with individual Z clips is often an effective configuration.
What You Need to Install Z Clips
Before beginning a Z clip installation, gather the appropriate tools and mounting hardware.
Typical installations may require:
- Z clips and/or compatible panel rail
- Appropriate fasteners
- Drill or driver
- Level
- Measuring tape
- Pencil or marking tool
- Stud finder when mounting to framed walls
- Anchors or other substrate-specific mounting hardware when required
Important: Fastener selection and spacing depend on the mounted load, substrate, Z clip system and installation conditions. Verify that the mounting surface, fasteners and Z clip system are appropriate for the application before installation.
How to Install Z Clips
Although exact installation requirements vary by application, most Z clip mounting systems follow the same basic process.
Step 1: Determine the Mounting Position
Start by determining the final location of the panel, sign, cabinet or other item.
Identify the structural attachment points available behind the finished wall surface whenever applicable.
For framed walls, locating studs can provide a solid attachment point. Other substrates—including masonry, concrete, metal framing and engineered wall systems—may require different anchors or fastening methods.
Mark the intended height and horizontal position of the installation.
Step 2: Position the Wall-Side Z Clip or Panel Rail
Place the wall-side Z clip or panel rail at the desired mounting height.
The engagement edge should be oriented upward so that it can receive the panel-side clip.
Use a level to confirm that the rail is horizontal before fastening it into place.
For long panel rails, check the level at multiple points along the extrusion before completing the installation.
Step 3: Secure the Wall-Side Cleat
Attach the Z clip or panel rail using fasteners appropriate for the mounting surface and anticipated load.
Where possible, fasten into structural material rather than relying solely on the finished wall surface.
For longer rails, distribute fasteners appropriately along the rail instead of concentrating them in one location.
Do not assume that the Z clip alone determines the capacity of the installation. The complete mounting system—including the substrate, fasteners, fastener spacing and panel construction—contributes to the performance of the finished installation.
Step 4: Attach the Z Clip to the Panel
Position the corresponding Z clip on the back of the item being mounted.
The engagement edge should face downward, opposite the wall-side rail.
Carefully measure its position so that the panel reaches the desired final height once the two profiles are engaged.
Use a level or straightedge to keep the clip aligned before fully tightening the fasteners.
Step 5: Align the Z Clips
Raise the panel above the wall-side rail and position the two profiles so their engagement surfaces align.
For larger panels, having another installer assist with alignment can make this process easier and reduce the risk of damaging the panel or surrounding surfaces.
Step 6: Lower the Panel Into Position
Carefully lower the panel until the two Z clip profiles fully engage.
The panel should settle into position while the mounting hardware remains concealed behind it.
Check the final installation for:
- Level
- Alignment
- Full engagement between the clips
- Clearance around adjacent panels or surfaces
- Stability of the mounted component
If the installation requires protection against accidental lifting, movement or unauthorized removal, consider a Z clip system designed with an additional locking or retention feature.
How to Choose the Right Z Clip
Not every Z clip has the same profile or capacity.
The appropriate system depends on several factors.
Mounted Object
Consider what you're mounting and how its weight is distributed.
A small sign has very different mounting requirements than a large architectural panel or cabinet.
Panel Size
Larger panels may benefit from continuous panel rails or multiple attachment points to improve alignment and distribute the load.
Mounting Surface
Drywall over wood framing, metal studs, plywood backing, masonry and other substrates require different fastening strategies.
Profile Size
Z clip systems are available in different profile sizes and geometries to accommodate different mounting requirements, clearances and loads.
Clip Length
Individual Z clips work well for localized attachment points, while continuous panel rails provide a longer mounting surface.
Removal Requirements
One advantage of Z clip mounting is the ability to remove panels without accessing visible fasteners.
This can be particularly useful for:

Retention Requirements
Standard Z clips generally allow the mounted component to be lifted upward for removal.
For applications where this movement needs to be restricted, a locking panel cleat may be more appropriate.
Z Clips vs. French Cleats
The terms Z clip and French cleat are sometimes used interchangeably because both rely on opposing profiles that interlock to support a mounted object.
Traditional French cleats are commonly made from wood with matching angled edges.

Using Inappropriate Fasteners
The mounting system is only as secure as its connection to the wall and mounted object. Select fasteners for the specific substrate and application.
Ignoring the Complete Mounting System
Z clip selection is only one part of the installation. Substrate strength, fasteners, spacing, panel construction and installation conditions all affect performance.
Not Accounting for Installation Clearance
Because panels typically engage by being lowered onto the wall rail, sufficient clearance may be required above the panel during installation.
Plan for this movement before positioning the rail.
