Closet Rod FAQ
Choosing a Closet Rod
What sizes are your aluminum closet rods?
The oval closet rod is 5/8" wide by 1-3/16" tall. The round closet rod is 1-5/16" in diameter. Both are 6063-T5 aluminum made in the USA and come in 48", 96", and 144" lengths.
What is the difference between an oval and a round closet rod?
The shape and the look. The oval rod is a slim, upright profile with a modern look. The round rod is the classic closet pole shape. Both come in the same lengths and finishes. Brackets and center supports are made for one shape, so order the ones that match your rod.
Which brackets fit my closet rod?
Oval rods use the Oval Closet Rod Bracket and the Oval Rod Center Support. Round rods use the Closed or Open Round Closet Rod Bracket and the Round Rod Center Support.
What is the difference between the open and closed round brackets?
The closed bracket has a full ring that holds the rod end in place. The open bracket has an open top, so the rod can be lifted in and out after both brackets are mounted.
What finishes are available?
Closet rods come in clear, black, gold, oil-rubbed bronze, and dull nickel anodized. Brackets and center supports come in black, gold, oil-rubbed bronze, and brushed nickel anodized.
Is an aluminum closet rod strong enough?
Our rods are 6063-T5 aluminum, a structural alloy that is lightweight and does not rust. Like any closet rod, a long span under a heavy load can bow, so add center supports on longer runs.
Installing a Closet Rod
How do you install a closet rod?
Screw an end bracket to each side wall at the same height, measure between them, cut the rod to fit, and set it in the brackets. On longer runs, screw a center support to the underside of the shelf above and hang the rod from it.
How high should a closet rod be?
A common height for a single rod is about 66" from the floor. For double hanging, the upper rod usually goes around 80" to 84" and the lower rod around 40" to 42". Adjust for the length of the clothes and the person using the closet.
When do I need a center support?
When the rod spans a wide closet or carries heavy clothing. A common rule of thumb is a support about every 4 feet. The supports mount under a shelf, so they work where there is a shelf above the rod.
How do you cut an aluminum closet rod?
Use a miter saw with a carbide-tipped blade rated for non-ferrous metal, cut slowly, and deburr the cut edge. Wear eye protection.
